A new champion of women’s college basketball will be crowned Sunday afternoon. South Carolina meets Iowa in the women's NCAA championship game today.

Iowa and South Carolina are set to meet in the title game of the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament in Cleveland. The Hawkeyes reached the championship stage with a thrilling Final Four win over UConn, while the Gamecocks maintained their undefeated campaign Friday with a rout of North Carolina State.

Dawn Staley’s side is a 6.5-point favorite at FanDuel Sportsbook. It will try to complete women’s college hoops’ first perfect season since 2016, while Caitlin Clark vies to close out her legendary collegiate career with her first NCAA title.

After two weeks of March Madness, there are only two teams left. The Iowa Hawkeyes will face off against the South Carolina Gamecocks in the NCAA women’s championship game today. Not only will this be Caitlin Clark’s final college basketball game, but the highly anticipated rematch of last year’s national semifinals in Dallas could also break television viewership records.

The Hawkeyes and Gamecocks are both No. 1 seeds. South Carolina advanced to the NCAA tournament championship game after a 78-59 win over No. 3 NC State on Friday. Iowa defeated UConn 71-69 in a nail-biter with the Final Four round coming down to the final seconds.

Women’s basketball has grown in popularity over the past few years thanks in no small part to the sensational play of Caitlin Clark.

She’s become a household name that’s brought millions of new fans to the sport. But it’s not just her. There’s a slew of ultra-talented players such as Angel Reese, Juju Watkins and Paige Bueckers that are garnering attention.

Ticket demand, attendance, media coverage and television ratings have all blown up over the past few years ever since the COVID-19 season was played in the bubble.

The ratings for the first four rounds of the tournament have skyrocketed, including a record-breaking 12.3 million who tuned in for the Iowa-LSU game in the Elite Eight on Monday.

There have always been great stars on the women’s side such as Diana Taurasi, Candace Parker and Brittney Griner. They just didn’t get the attention that players today do.

Griner was part of the 2013 draft class with Elena Delle Donne and Skylar Diggins-Smith that had a huge following when they were coming into the WNBA. She was happy to see all the new attention on the sport that Clark and Reese have brought.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma agreed that more coverage has helped the sport grow. His team for the past three decades has been the most covered and most well-known program in the country. Now he sees a lot more schools and players get coverage.

One area of growth that isn’t talked about a lot is the changes to the game itself made in 2015, according to women’s basketball analyst LaChina Robinson. Playing four quarters, advancing the ball in the last minute of the contest. The men still play two 20-minute halves and don’t allow the ball to advance at the end.

The Gamecocks won both of the previous national title games in which they've played, in 2021 and 2022. They are in search of the 10th perfect season in women's college basketball history, now 37-0 after overcoming NC State in the Final Four.

This is Iowa's first time in the Final Four as a one seed, besting UConn in their most recent matchup, 71-69. Despite being held to only six points in the first half, Caitlin Clark scored 21 points and managed nine rebounds in the win.

The two teams met in last year's Final Four, where Iowa took down the Gamecocks, 77-73, to end their last perfect season before the title game. This season, South Carolina has held its 10 ranked opponents to under 70 points per game, and it is outscoring its opponents by 20 points per game in the paint at the NCAA Tournament.

Since 2019, Iowa is 16-4 in the NCAA Tournament. This year, Clark took the Hawkeyes right back to where they were in 2023 to the championship game, this time looking to take home the win against the Gamecocks.

Iowa returns to the Championship after last year's near-miss. The team lost to LSU in the final game last year, but they have since avenged themselves by beating out the Tigers earlier in the tournament during the Elite Eight games. Caitlin Clark has helped lead the team to victory after an amazing season wherein she broke the Division 1 career points record for both men and women. Clark is expected to be drafted into the WNBA later this month and is vying for an NCAA Championship win to cap off her senior year.

South Carolina has had an incredible season and an overall better tournament experience than last year, which saw them knocked out in the Final Four during a game against Iowa. Team Captain Kamilla Cardoso leads the team in both points and rebounds. The team last won the Championship in 2022 in a game against UConn. A victory this year would give them not just the Championship, but an undefeated overall season.

It's Championship Sunday in Cleveland. The NCAA Women's Tournament reaches its conclusion when top seeds South Carolina and Iowa clash inside the Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse with everything on the line.

The two teams met in last year's Final Four with the Hawkeyes springing the upset to reach the national title game. Now, they meet again with the title at stake.

Dawn Staley's team is on a mission to join an exclusive list of teams that have won the national title with a perfect record. So far, there have only been nine teams to do so.

Despite losing all five starters from last season, the Gamecocks have an even deeper roster and are stronger on both sides of the court. Kamilla Cardoso is the veteran leader who is averaging a team-high 14.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest. South Carolina is hard to guard because seven Gamecocks average over eight points per game.
